In the second edition of our WTF Series Blogger Amy Philips tells us why she can't get on board with the extreme crop top trend.
After the launch of my first WTF column last week, focusing on high end couture, this week I thought I would bring things a little closer to home with a trend that took over many of our favourite high street brands last year, but can still be found in a few stores today.
This week’s fashion WTF moment came from an adaptation of one of my favourite fashion items, the humble crop top. In March 2017 came the invasion of the, in my opinion, horrendous ‘extreme crop top’.

As shown above the crop top has been taken to extreme lengths, hence the name, by pretty much removing all the fabric used to create it. This top reminds me of the reason why I never leave clothes in the dryer too long in case they end up shrinking like this.

I am all for the underwear as outerwear movement, as some cute bralettes are to die for and I cannot wait to show them to the world, but I think this takes it slightly too far. Whatever item of clothing you are wearing underneath is now entirely exposed for the world to see, I couldn’t imagine looking my lecturer in the eye wearing this with my whole chest pretty much out.
Call me boring, but functionality for me is key. I want to be happy and comfortable in whatever I am wearing, as thats when I believe we look and feel our best. But with this monstrosity functionality has well and truly died.

Here this jumper design suggests it should be worn in the winter when it's chilly outside. Taking in the fact the only part of your body which is covered are your arms and collarbones, which won't be enough to keep anybody warm, leaves me confused about what season this should be worn in.
However, I am slightly more concerned about what is exposed rather than what’s covered. For ladies with ample assets they could be one sudden movement away from a nip-slip related disaster.
We already see enough scantily clad individuals on a Wednesday night for POP, I don’t want to increase the risk of seeing more than I bargained for of my course-mates to everyday of the week. I know sometimes less is more but this surely can be counted as an exception.

Unsurprisingly, there have been very few celebrities who have been 100% down for this new trend. Kylie Jenner opted for this extreme cropped jumper but chose to layer this over a vest top, so obviously she has a different opinion of baring all than her half-sister Kim K.
Just when I thought I had seen everything in the ‘extreme’ crop world I witnessed the piece which probably shocked me the most. The male extreme crop top. Despite this model’s modesty (his nipples) being covered, little else is and whilst the likes of Channing Tatum surely could pull this off (swoon) I doubt there could many others who could do the same.

Honestly, I am not sold on this trend at all, but also being a poor student I cannot justify paying the price of a standard shirt when it is using less than half of the standard amount of fabric. Long live the crop top, but the extreme crop top is not making its way into my wardrobe any time soon.
I Just want to express these are my own views, based on my own styles and fashion preferences. I’m sure some of you guys will love these tops and I embrace as much fashion diversity as possible. Fashion love x
