Warwick Blogger Amy Philips third edition of the 'What The Fashion series' moves from fashion to beauty, discovering the crazy world of artistic eyebrows...
With both of my previous WTF columns focusing solely on fashion and accessories I thought we could shake things up this week by looking into the world of beauty instead. Just like fashion the beauty trends come and go, from A- list celebs super shiny lip-gloss to thick eyeliner, these trends come and go as frequently as in the fashion world.
I’m not going to lie that make up is not one of my strengths and lets just say my attempts at winged eyeliner always end up with me needing anger management and starting my make up all over again (whoops). But this new trend has truly made me wonder who would be able to create this look and then pull it off.
In the recent decade, eyebrows have probably become one of the most important features of the face, anyone remember ‘eyebrows on fleek’? In the noughties the trend for eyebrows was to quite literally have none at all ; the thinner the better. Please can someone explain why anyone thought this was a good look?
Then after Cara Delevingne made the statement look of the 'Power Brow', in which ' the bigger and bolder the better', this has been the trend which pretty much has stayed ever since.
However, here there are a couple of new emerging trends which I would like to say ‘WTF’ to. Here there is the feather brow (on the right) and dragon brow (on the left) looks.
Now I am all for expressing yourself but I feel this might be taking it a step too far. These brows remind me of childhood drawing where you have the angry looking face with squiggly lines for eyebrows.
I’m sure I can’t be the only person who struggled keeping their eyebrows in shape in a simple enough arch formation, now having the thought of constructing these shapes is truly beyond me. I don’t think one brow appointment will be enough to keep this brow trend in check, and set aside at least 15 minutes combing time in the morning to get these brows looking their finest.
These brows are really channelling a punk rock vibe, which would look great with leather zipped trousers walking down Camden High street, but I can imagine the strange looks I would get rocking these brows in downstairs smack.
Now moving on to the feather brows, I can’t explain it but something makes me feel really uneasy about the line running straight down the middle of the eyebrow, almost like its been shaved out as a dare – not my normal style. Also, all the hairs being separated and spaced apart is 1. An absolute pain and surely no one has time for that and 2. Reminds me a little bit of a caterpillar. Can anyone else see the resemblance? And I would rather not spend my time trying to ignore peoples glares as they try to figure out what’s on my face.
On the point of eyebrows, I am also very much unsure of the trend of eye brow dying. Not the natural coloured tint which makes our morning routine a smidge quicker but instead the weird and the wacky, or simply not there at all eyebrow dye.
Every fashion week at least one designer goes for the bleached brows look (poor Kaia Gerber) and every year I am left thinking why? The eyebrows provide such a beautiful frame for the eyes, and I think when the eyebrows are gone it gives an alien/mutant human vibe – not a look I want to rock. Safe to say my messy brow look won’t be changing any time soon.
I Just want to express these are my own views, based on my own styles and beauty preferences. I’m sure some of you guys will love these eyebrows and I embrace as much beauty diversity as possible. Fashion love x
