When the word Sports ball is uttered around campus or the endless Facebook invites to society balls flood your notifications, the only sentences that seem to scream out of your group chats are “Idk what to wear!” or “I need to buy a new dress” or “what are you girls wearing?”. If I had a penny every time I heard this I would be a billionaire. So, why not save yourself the stress, grab some hot coco or a glass of wine, light some candles, relax and let me guide you into the world of elegance and lush when it comes to preparing for a ball.

The ‘never can go wrong’ elegant maxi dress

If you are absolutely clueless and want to play it safe, a sleek maxi dress can go a long way. They are perfect for ball occasions and can be elegant and stylish. If you want to go for something a bit more daring but still keep the maxi dress look, I would suggest a thigh high leg slit, a statement that YOU dare to be different and you’re a boss who can own this bold look. Pair your maxi dress with some statement earrings and a petite crystallised clutch and you are on your way to a finished red-carpet look.

The ‘all in one’ Midi dress

Whether it be a bodycon or a skater dress, midi dresses give that balance. It is the most popular of dresses to aim for at the ball. It’s perfect for the duration of the ball and after parties. Midi dresses are also a good choice if you want to go for a patterned look, I would suggest lace or crochet. Stay clear of too much floral, its easy to get swept up in the matrix of flowers, which is a no no for a ball. For these dresses its almost impossible to go wrong with colour, but if you want specifics deepened colours like emerald greens, maroons and blues go nicely in the evenings. The one thing I can’t stand is how plain people leave their midi dresses. Yes, they do look amazing on their own, but if you want a complete look, finish it off with a statement bangle or ring.

Juvenescent Jumpsuits

Want something easy to walk in, look no further than a jumpsuit, these are sophisticated yet stylish. Short, long or no sleeves or a plunge or not, jumpsuits provide freedom for you to dance the night away fashionably. I don’t see many of these at balls, but having said that they are the perfect outfit to stand out in and look fierce in. I would suggest wearing long drop-down earrings, ear cuffs or some silver hoops to finish off the look.

Lush Satin

Keeping up with the trends is a must and if you must do this, satin dresses is where you want to head. Satin has been making headlines yet again with Misguided and Pretty Little Thing dedicating a whole section to satin dresses, with the latter partnering with the lovely Ashley Graham and her satin takeover. If you can’t take it from me, take it from Ashley! Satin already makes your dress stand out with its glossiness and lush feeling so accessorise lightly with simple chain necklaces and an anklet to complement the softness of your dress.

Sequins, Embellishments and Sparkle

What would a ball be without a bit of sparkle? It would be boring. If you want to have a bit of fun and look lively, sequins, embellishments or sparkly materials are a good choice to give that WOW factor. This look will no doubt leave an impression on your fellow peers and leave you looking sparkly all night. Stick with colours such as cream, white, grey, black, silver and gold to get the full elegant sparkle effect. Finish off with some simple small studded earrings and get ready to shine!

Ladies, its as simple as that. Put away your gym leggings and hoodies for the night and prepare yourself for a glamourous ball. Don’t stress over what you should and shouldn’t wear. Take my advice and you’ll be camera ready in no time. Whatever you dare to be the on the night of your ball, whether it be lush, bold or fierce, I hope you enjoy your night and be your fashionable selves!
