Freshers : In Warwick Fashion...

Writer's picture: Warwick FashionWarwick Fashion

By Sophia Lelew

Dear Freshers who are currently packing their suitcases ready to come to Warwick - Stop right there! Before you go any further, here’s a little insider into what kinda outfits you’ll be seeing around campus, plus a few expert opinions from Warwick Fashion Society’s head bloggers Lara Apstein and Niamh Smith.

LECTURES/LIBRARY

So when you’re unlucky enough to have a triple Tuesday or have to do a library day - comfort rules over everything. On a fashion scale of British to European, let’s see which category you fall into.

European:

Big ass Moncler Parka because “UK weather may as well be Siberian”, a Fjallraven Kaenfjsfndk rucksack, the classic Longchamp tote and any Warwick Bookshop merch.

Where to buy?

Warwick Bookshop, Urban Outfitters, Tommy Hilfiger

What does Lara say? Although I am more of a student who tries to stay fashionable, even through exam stress, I agree that comfort is key, and a Warwick University hoodie (or society hoodie) is the best choice. Nevertheless, I would recommend holding off on the parka, unless its snowing and actually freezing. (Personal Tip: complaining about the cold won’t make it go away but it will definitely make it more bearable)

What does Niamh say? So i’m not here for the parka ( personal opinion of course), but i think the rucksack and tote, cliche as they may be, are totally pratical while still being fashionable! As for the warwick merch, you’ve gotta stay repping your uni…

Natives:

Usually girly pieces, such as pinafores, pink tones, floral patterns, chelsea boots and statement tees.

Where to buy?

Asos, Missguided, Topshop

What does Lara say? I am a fan of crop tops, tees and fluffy coats, and although I love colours in winter, I would recommend leaving the pretty pastels in our closets at home, safely tucked away for next summer. Also, good boots are life savers, but try to chose leather over suede as the latter one will get ruined within a week of Warwick rain.

What does Niamh say? I’m not a personal fan ; it all seems a little bit twee and quaint. I’ve totally seen it done well though ; after all, with all those library sessions, whatever your comfortable in is key!

SMACK:

One of Leamington’s finest, SMACK Nightclub is split into two floors to cater to two contrasting types of people → the downstairs people and the upstairs people.

The Downstairs People:

For all the roadmen out there who enjoy listening to grime, anything by Drake and tend to pull faces like this when they throw shapes…

We’re talking oversized retro adidas jackets, Kappa crop tops, Gosha Rubchinskiy, black ripped skinny jeans, nike air max trainers, fanny packs, oversized gold hoop earrings and sports caps.

Where to buy?

Flea markets, vintage stores, Asos marketplace, sports shops.

What does Lara say? I am going to be super honest here; if you are going to downstairs smack, be ready to SWEAT. With that being said, this look fits the vibe perfectly, and although your hair will be drenched, your outfit will remain on point.

What does Niamh say? Downstairs smack is a solid fav – the outfits match the vibe! A true example of clubbing in comfort – wear that windbreaker and those giant hoops with pride! xo

The Upstairs people:

On the main dance floor, expect some Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa kinda vibes. This is where the average Warwick student will be, either head bobbing with their vodka coke (guys) or going for it in a group circle (gals). You may also see the people who gave up queing to get in downstairs that will be stood awkwardly in the corner because “it’s just not their kind of music”. However, they’ll soon retreat to the smoking area for the rest of the night.

Outfit wise, it’s all about the lace crop tops, mesh bodysuits, black flares and reebok classics (dirty of course).

Where to buy?

Topshop, Pretty Little Thing, Missguided, New Look

What does Lara say? As I’ve said before, I am a fan of a good crop top, and I honestly think that it is the perfect staple for a night out! Keep your outfit simple and wear pieces that you don’t mind getting alcohol thrown on (personal experience), and you’ll have a lot of fun!! If you’re a smoking area person, be sure to keep your coat in the seats upstairs to take it with you!

What does Niamh say? Crop top and bodysuits are a closet staple for me ; mind you, bodysuits can sometimes not be the best for clubbing, especially if you’re feeling a bit tipsy. Although not my music, the outfits do enable free dance movement, so it’s a thumbs up from me!

POP

The best thing to happen on a Wednesday - It’s Discooo Daveeee! Oh dear. It’s that time of the week to raid your wardrobe and put something together which somewhat suits your circling theme. Toga theme? This bed sheet should do. Or the classic last minute costume - get some cardboard, write the name of your costume on it and then stick it round your neck.

Where to buy?

Check out fancy dress shop Planet Bong in Leamington or just have a roam around your flat to see what random bits you manage to piece together.

What does Lara say? Spending money on a fancy dress outfit for pop is a waste of money as you are very likely to get purple all over it! Instead, go through all your stuff (and you’re flatmates) and make something up and have fun with it!! (Also, you’ll probably be so smashed within an hour that you will forget all about your outfit)

What does Niamh say? Some of the outfits seen at pop are … interesting to say the least! While alot of the outifts do seem to have been constructed in a rush, out of kitchen utensils and whatever else people have managed to find in their accomdation, and can be revealing( 'Anything but clothes' springs to mind ; a personal fav), it’s just a bit of a laugh, and one that should be embraced!

NEON

To best describe Neon, it is one big swarm of sweaty people jumping up and down to chart hits from last summer. However, it’s probably the club where people make the most effort with their outfit.

We’re talking mini skirts, crop tops, block heels, glittery tops and Stan Smith trainers (dirty of course)

Where to buy?

Pretty Little Thing, Missguided, Topshop, Miss Selfridge, H&M, Forever 21

What does Lara say? If there is an outfit that I used countless times, it is the typical neon outfit, which I call, “cute but comfy”. For me, the perfect neon outfit is similar to what we can see above, and it is produced from a variation of: black jeans/skirt, cute top (possibly cropped), and my Adidas Superstars, which started out as white and now are just brown. Remember to be comfortable, but not too much as they won’t let you in in sweats (lol).

What does Niamh say? Alot of the clubs can be on the more causal side, which is great when you can’t be bothered to spend ages getting ready, but sometimes it’s nice to dress up a bit! So I’m here for a crop top and a mini skirt from time to time, especially if it’s making you feel extra cute.

MORNING AFTER

So after your mad one, you’re not likely to be in the best of moods the next day. 1 heavy pre-drinks, 8 jäger bombs and a block of cheese later, or Viallis (or was it just me who would eat such strange things in huge quantities after a heavy night out) - it’s time to let the body recover! Lectures are probably out - it’s time for a full day Netflix marathon! Here’s what you’ll probably be wearing...

It’s all about that signature leavers’ hoodie, old dressing gown and socks and sliders combo.

Where to buy?

Fruit of the Loom, Primark

What does Lara say? If you haven’t had a day of your grungiest sweats, then you probably haven’t had a hungover! BUT, you will never catch me dead in socks and sliders, UGG boots all the way baby. If you are hangover and actually leaving your room, I recommend changing your sweats for some jeans and hoodie, even if that simple change of clothing takes you half an hour!

What does Niamh say? Honestly, this look is a uni staple ; me and my friends would spend many a day rocking this outfit. While maybe not the most stylish, certainly a necessity. Who has time to be trying to look cute when your nursing a hangover from one two many shots from the night before? ( *minus the socks and sliders, I can’t excuse those.)

So, is it as you expected? Everyone at FSW looks forward to seeing what this year’s Freshers have to bring to the Warwick fashion world! Will you be a follower or a trend-setter? As the new year quickly approaches, we’ll soon find out...
